Woodson’s Academic Dean to Receive National Award

The nonprofit NEA Foundation, which promotes public education, has tapped four dozen educators across the country -- including Dion Copeland of Carter G. Woodson Academy -- to receive the 2026 Travelers Award for Teaching Excellence. The honor recognizes leadership in the teaching profession, community engagement, and commitment to expanding opportunities for all through public education.

Copeland serves as academic dean at Woodson, where he has worked for two years. He has been with Fayette County Public Schools five years overall, having taught eighth grade Social Studies, 11th grade U.S. History, and 11th grade dual-credit History. “I quickly discovered my love for middle school, finding joy in creating memorable and meaningful learning experiences for my students,” Copeland recalled. He also previously worked in Special Education, supporting students with emotional and behavioral disorders.

Copeland and fellow award recipients will be featured at the 2026 Salute to Excellence in Education Gala, set for Feb. 13 at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. Five of the 48 honorees will receive the Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence, which includes a $10,000 prize and a short documentary showcasing their classroom practice. One overall winner will receive the NEA Member Benefits Award and $25,000. The foundation appreciates Travelers’ generous support of the program.
