Woodson’s Ag Club Earns National Recognition

A club at Carter G. Woodson Academy has been named the National Junior MANRRS Chapter of the Year. Adviser Jacob Ball and students accepted the inaugural award in early April at the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) National Conference and Career Expo, where members participated in events, workshops, and networking all week.

Junior MANRRS is for students in grades 7-12 interested in a future in science, technology, engineering, agriculture, mathematics, or related careers. The national award, sponsored by Purdue University, is designed to promote leadership development among local chapters. Ball, who is a National Board Certified Teacher and a Milken Award winner, shared the narrative he submitted with his club’s application:

“Just six years ago, our current senior class stepped into seventh-grade agriscience exploration with no formal background in agriculture. At the time, our program was brand new and was an ambitious effort to create something bold and unique in the ag education space,” Ball said. “Today, thanks to their vision, perseverance, and leadership, the CGWA Agriculture Scholars have built an award-winning, nationally celebrated chapter. This is more than an award — it’s a legacy.”

“We’re just getting started,” he added. “This recognition isn’t the finish line — it’s a launchpad. We’re excited to build on this momentum and continue inspiring the next generation of agricultural leaders!”
